OC B XV v Farnham Vets
On an unusually warm afternoon the mighty OC Vets took on the league favourites Farnham in what was to become a battle of 2 halves.Farnham had put nearly 50 points on the perennial league winners Esher the previous game and so we knew the fixture was going to be tough.
At the first line out it was obvious that several new players had joined the ranks of the resurgent Farnham - and they all seemed to have graduated from the 6 foot 5 and 18 stone school of rugby. Despite the obvious weight disadvantage, OC's acquitted themselves well and kept repeated attacks from the forwards and back division at bay. Bad luck struck OC's early doors - as an unfortunate tackle left James Ross being carried off with a double fracture to his leg. Jonny Arthur stepped manfully into the breach and the game continued its confrontational pattern. The front row triumvirate of JJ, Greg and Giles were unyielding under mounting pressure - and the back row forwards of Joe Martin, Rhys and Emmet were kept busy all half chopping down wave after wave of rolling mauls. The evergreen Craig Hope and ever ready Paul Cross threw their weight into proceedings - and the half nearly ended 3-0 to the home side. A flying tap tackle by Ray on the black and white of Farnham forced their inside centre to spill the ball within metres of OC's try line in the dying minutes of the first half - and only when they took a quick tap penalty yards from our white wash a minute later and flew the ball wide did Farnham breach our try line at all - and we ended the initial session 8-0 down.
In the second half with a fierce wind in our faces Farnham pinned us down in the corner of our 22 - and capitalized with 2 tries from their well drilled rolling mauls. The OC half backs of Billy Merrit and Matt Kates gradually won back the momentum later in the half, and with some awesome tackling by Tom Fisher at outside centre it looked like the steam had left the Farnham attack. Elusive running by Steve Brownrigg piled on the pressure - and in the fourth quarter quick thinking by the mercurial Will Fawcett led to a throw in to Tom up in the opposition 22 who raced in for a belly flop try. Shortly afterwards, OC's piled on the points when Will raced onto an elusive Brownrigg run and deft pass. Andrew Craig was solid on the wing and under the high ball and Ben Edwards was muscular in the tackle area - as the Farnham players retired injured - or spent, under the OC's third and fourth quarter onslaught.
However, time ran out - and Farnham ended up eventual winners 27-12 in what both teams agreed was a fantastic game of rugby. OC's left the pitch knowing they had acquitted themselves and the club well despite losing their unbeaten record!.
