Law Changes for season 2009/10

In their wisdom the IRB have looked at the 'ELVs' and decidied that most of them are not worth keeping. However there is the usual tranche of rugby law changes for us to digest and here they are:

1.    ELVs Adopted into Law

The following ELVs are to be adopted into Law:

Law 6 – Assistant Referees able to assist Referees in any way the Referee requires

Law 19 – If a team puts the ball back in their own 22 and the ball is subsequently kicked directly into touch there is no gain in ground

Law 19 – A quick throw may be thrown in straight or towards the throwing team’s goal line

Law 19 – The receiver at the lineout must be two metres back away from the lineout

Law 19 – The player who is in opposition to the player throwing in the ball must stand in the area between the five metre line and touch line and must be two metres from the line of touch and at least two metres from the lineout

Law 19 – Lineout players may pre-grip a jumper before the ball is thrown in

Law 19 – The lifting of lineout jumpers is permitted

Law 20 – Introduction of an offside line five metres behind the hindmost feet of the Scrum

Law 20 – Scrum half offside line at the Scrum

Law 20 – The corner posts are no longer considered to be touch in goal except when the ball is grounded against the post

2.    Union-specific ELVs approved by Council

a) Unions may implement rolling substitutions at defined levels of the Game

b) A Union having jurisdiction over a Game may implement a half time interval of not more than 15 minutes, but not at international level

c) A Union may implement the Under 19 Scrum Law Variation at a defined level of the Game under its jurisdiction

Summer Training Has Started

Every Wednesday at the Club you can get some exercise. From 7.45 to 9pm there will be touch rugby, in various formats to keep it interesting, interspersed with some general fitness drills (don't worry, not too many!).

Full training under coach Andy Houston will begin on Wednesday 2nd September.

OCRFC Under-21 XV Win at the Cronk-Cunis Tournament!

Last Sunday, the 31st August, the Old Cranleighans won the Shield at the Cronk-Cunis Under-21 Public Schools tournament. After beating Eton in the first round they narrowly and unluckily lost to Wellington College in the 2nd, going on to beat Gordonstoun, Eastbourne and Chislehurst & Sidcup in the Shield competition.

Having kicked-off at 10.30, their last match finished at 7.15 - a marathon 5 half games or 200 minutes of rugby!

Content needed

We need some articles on subjects connected with Surrey rugby, rugby at the Club, 2nd and B 15 teams, junior rugby - and anything else relevant. Please do what you can to help out here.

Rules formatting

You may have noticed that we have various sets of rules, including the Laws of Rugby and so on, on the Resources page. We thought this material would be useful as it's hard to find otherwise - especially with the RFU website in the state it's in. However, converting this material in bulk for web publishing is not a five-minute job, and the first cut & paste result is often gibberish. If anyone can help with this task, please let the webmaster know. All you need to do is look through the pages and correct errors by reference to the original document (probably a PDF).

We have some more of this material to go up, but there isn't much point till the first lot is fully sorted. All help gratefully received.

Login passwords

We should have allocated usernames and passwords in March, but things have been a bit hectic. We're processing that now, so you should get your access details soon. You can change your username if you prefer another by emailing the webmaster - see the Contacts page.

The new CMS site

The OC website is now being run on a CMS (content management system). This is a dynamic application that resides on the server and works with a database. Effectively this means the website is much more capable and can have a great many more features.

Many of the website page addresses have changed, and new pages have been added. Please update your Bookmarks / Favourites now.

Issuing of passwords for the members area should be completed by the end of March.

If you have trouble finding a page (or the new version of it) then flush your browser cache: hit Cntrl+F5 - control plus F5 at the same time. This forces a full reload of the whole page.

OC Society website

Martin Williamson, webmaster for many of the OC group sites, tells us that there is now an official OC Society site. We have therefore changed the link on our front page OC Sites menu to the new site, to reflect this.

The original, 'unofficial' site, was set up by Martin to give the Society an Internet presence; but now there is a website being looked after by a Society member, it seems that the older site may no longer feature as the Society's first point of contact online.

We should also take this opportunity to thank Martin for his work on the OC site. Martin set up the original site and ran it for many years, thus providing a solid foundation for future growth. Many current members will have first known of the OCs from the website, so it has always been an important part of the Club.
